We set up The D’Oliveira Foundation on Nov 28th 2012 with the aim of honouring the memory of one of Worcestershire’s greats, namely Basil D’Oliveira. Then Basil’s son, Damian D’Oliveira became very poorly soon after the launch and tragically lost his battle with cancer. I spoke to our committee and it was felt that we should rename the foundation, it was decided to name it The D’Oliveira Foundation, to honour both Basil and Damian D’Oliveira. The aim was to raise funds for grass roots cricket, something that both ‘Dollys’ were passionate about, and so the committee set about ideas to raise the funds that were needed if we were to succeed. Mark Ashbourne, one of the committee members, came up with the idea that he would organise a ‘walk’ from WCCC to Glamorgan CCC to raise awareness and collect funds along the way. This proved to be the launching pad of the foundation with thousands raised in both sponsorship and collections. Other events that we have organized include Golf Days, Charity Cricket matches and Quiz nights to name but a few, each helping to raise the required funds needed to erect the busts and plinth. Our ‘dream’ was realised when the ‘committee’ handed over the Busts of Basil and Damian to the D’Oliveira family at our Gala Dinner at New Road on Saturday November 11th. It was both emotional and fitting that after 5 years of fund raising the Busts were for the first time on display for all to admire. For me personally it was a very emotional night, because the ‘Dollys’ are not just a famous cricketing family but personal friends, to which I feel truly blessed to be called a friend. So next year, 2017 will be the 50th year of The D’Oliveira Affair and we plan to mark this in a truly fitting way, and have already secured a very special guest speaker for the evening. So hopefully I’ll see you there !! Thank you for your support Dormston Cook Co-Founder and Chairman
